Can You Read This?

Can you read this in first attempt?

Not possible to read anything at all? Follow the guidelines bellow.

Close your eyes almost 90% so that you can actually read it, it's really cool.
Test yourself.

The way this works is, when reading, your eyes and brain work together to take in information and make sense of what it is. One of the steps in understanding what it being read, your brain must see what the text is and what is the background. In this example the boarder of the text is the same color as the text itself, therefore your brain thinks the text is the background and so it tries to understand what the background says which it thinks is the text.

It is much easier for humans to read black text on a white background because those two colors are contrasted more than any other, like if there was black text on a gray background it would take longer to differentiate the two apart and thus take more effort to read what is write. It is also much easier for people to read black text on a white background because when reading black text the eye only needs to focus on what is presented, and in a case of white text on a black background it would be more challenging because the eyes and brain would need to work harder to distinguish what is not present in order to understand what is written.

Capturing the moment after the balloon popped and preceding the decentralization of the water mass. Showing how the constriction of the rubber balloon is a greater force than gravity on the water molecules. Very cool.

Coke Bottle Lightbulb

This was done in Philippines. Water and bleach in bottle of coke was fitted on the roof. It reflects sunlight and is equal to 55 watt, a neat concept. I wonder if it would work on a bigger scale, like building the bulb the height of a floor, or going down many sub levels.

Switching Is Simple

How to eat healthy? Switch from white to brown foods; regular white sugar to brown sugar, white rice to brown rice, white bread to brown bread.

A similar concept to that of the green vegetables idea.

Does the "Brown is better" concept apply to all foods? No, but in cases of wheat based products, brown foods tend to be better for people than the white counterparts.

How Much Sugar Are You Getting?

Today there is sugar in just about everything, both in natural produce or manufactured for consumption. Check out this neat illustration of sugar levels in commonly consumed products.

Craft Wars Crap

Jun 29, 2012

I saw a commercial on IFC for a new series of theirs called Craft Wars. It seems to be yet another installment on the ever growing list of terrible reality television shows with less than a snowballs chance of success. It’s basically about taking three craft fanatics and giving them a pile of junk and they must create something in the time allotted, such as a bench. It’s an awful premise. I anticipate the series to be cancelled before the first season is over. Maybe if they can do better than the average they will be picked back up, but even though the bar is set so low I don’t think they have even that in the potential.

Now the host is a blonde lady with two co-hosts, one male one female (obviously), and the main host is utterly grotesque, her face scares me, and her personality is uneasy right off the bat. She looks like an over cosmetisized plastic surgery train wreck due to a series of failed botched surgeries one after another. With so much crap on television the last thing the world needs is another mind numbing, stupefying superficial epic failure.

People Pay Less, Company Cuts Corners

I was at the grocery store today, and I was looking at some everyday low prices items and they were set so cheap. I'm no Price is Right wizard or anything but correct me if I’m wrong but here’s some examples; $3.00 for a 4 pack of gum, $1.00 for a box of cookies and $0.67 for a watermelon. Aren’t prices supposed to increase over time due to inflation? But the prices are going lower, something’s has got to give and if they don’t then the bottoms going to fall out and food prices are going to sky rocket in my opinion.

The way I see it is, consumers want to spend as little as possible for the things they buy every day, in order to keep customers happy and coming back, big companies are pressured to keep prices down and thus they must cut costs. Doing this means laying off employees, cutting corners, sacrificing customer services and more. How low can prices actually go? Everything for a penny stores? That would never work.

So many people refuse to spend money on food and things they need so companies have to drop the prices in order to move items off the shelves then when the company can’t afford to keep the staff or the stores they must let employees go. I know it’s only a fraction of the population that is subject to these criteria. And of course placing blame will not solve anything, we should all know that, but even though it stands to reason consumers are driven by greed, selfishness, shortsightedness, irresponsibility and a whole host of undesirable character traits they cannot be expected to be held responsible for the bigger picture. Consumers are merely cogs in the machine that is known as capitalism. But all cogs must be created somehow, I do not believe in an all-powerful individual who controls the economy and no evil conglomerate of executives mold the world’s money to suit their own goals. It is all just a cycle of cause and effect, A leads to B, B leads to C, C leads to A, and the cycle grows and continues and changes and repeats over and over manifesting itself in every crevice of humanity and inevitably evolving into something new and better or dies off. Natural selection is not just for animals anymore, when an entity develops a life of its own it becomes capable of evolution and can either adapt and advance or fall extinct.

Owls and Seagulls Unfortunately Die

I find the nature of the end of birds lives interesting, in particular those of the Owl and Seagull.

For starters when an Owl knows it is going to die, it will not dig a grave or make emends. An owl will perch itself upon a branch and fall to the ground when it dies. This is sad to me. Among the Kikuyu of Kenya it was believed that owls were harbingers of death. If one saw an owl or heard its hoot, someone was going to die.

Also seagulls have a unique way of dying. To my understanding what they do is fly out toward the middle of the ocean, as far as they can go and when it’s time to die, fall to the water and it's done. If this is true I do not know because we cannot ask them. Maybe they simply fly away from land where they live in search for food or following fishing boats for easy food but cannot make it back to land to rest. It could be their nature to fly out to the ocean to die, as a way of not spreading desease to it's fellow birds once decomposition begins or maybe it is done to prevent predators from eating their bodies once they have died.

Montel Williams

Montel Williams was a talk show host of the same name. I’ve never seen it but I am fairly sure it was a thing. So apparently it was cancelled a few years back and lately he’s been showing up on a bunch of infomercials. Every day he shows up, representing a new product that goes a little something like this “Hey folks, Montel here and I want to tell you about this great new product, exciting new product, terrific new product, etc…” I think this is a reasonable indicator that Mr. Williams’ career is over. His reputation from the talk show, which failed once the talk show fad wave expired he was out of work and now he’s run out of whatever credibility to make what money he can from “acting”. I think it would be in Mr. Williams’ best interest to look for a new career path.

Eye Knife Story

Did you heard about that guy last week who was training to be a chef? He was learning about the knifes and when he got to the ones used for chopping he was puzzled because looking at the blade at one angle it looked much bigger, but at a different angle the blade seemed to get smaller and smaller and disappear. So this fellow had the bright idea to gaze upon the blade with the tip close to his eye, with the handle away from his face, he looked closer at the blade, moving closer and closer trying to figure out why it looked the way it did. A funny thing about the human eye, the pupil and its underlying tissue has no nerve endings and thus cannot feel anything, which is why they don’t need to use anesthetic when preforming eye surgery. The man continued to look closer at blade until it pierced the center of his eye, unable to feel or see what had happened the man continued to inch the blade deeper into his eye, unaware of what was happening, deeper and deeper all the way back until it scratched his skull. This alarmed the man and he retracted the blade, while doing so the angle had adjusted and consequentially opened the tare in the retinal-tissue further. From this point on the damage worsened, by now the poor man’s supervisor noticed what was happening and called an ambulance. The paramedics were able to stop the bleeding but the doctor was forced to remove the nearly split irreparable eye ball from the man’s head.

The Honeybee’s Final Sting

Jun 26, 2012

If you’ve ever wondered why honeybees tend to die after stinging someone this picture says it all. In an incredible capture by Kathy Keatley Garvey, a UC Davis Communications Specialist in the Department of Enomology, we see a bee stinging a person’s arm and then attempting to fly away as the stinger remains lodged in the victim. That trail of goo you see? It’s actually the bee’s abdominal tissue. The remarkable capture netted Garvey the first-place gold feature photo award in an Association for Communication Excellence competition.

On the fortunate timing, Garvey said she was walking with a friend and a bee came close to him and started buzzing in a high-pitch. She said that’s normally a telltale sign that a bee’s about to sting, so she readied her camera and snapped four photos.

"Die Geschichte vom Daumenlutscher" (The Story of the Thumb-Sucker)

If you, like me, have ever wondered why Germans are so good at abiding by rules, I am going to posit the theory it’s because they grew up on a steady diet of stories promising an agonising death if they didn’t eat their soup or stop rocking backwards on their chair.

Let's talk about Der Struwwelpeter (1845). Der Struwwelpeter is a popular German children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way. The title of the first story provides the title of the whole book. Literally translated, Struwwel-Peter means Shaggy-Peter.

"Struwwelpeter" (Shaggy-Peter)
As children's literature scholar Penni Cotton writes, Hoffmann wrote Struwwelpeter in reaction to the lack of good children's books. Intending to buy a picture book as a Christmas present for his three-year-old son, Hoffmann instead wrote and illustrated his own book. Hoffmann was persuaded by friends to publish the book anonymously as Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder mit 15 schön kolorierten Tafeln für Kinder von 3–6 Jahren (Funny Stories and Whimsical Pictures with 15 Beautifully Coloured Panels for Children Aged 3 to 6) in 1845. It was not until the third edition in 1858 that the book was published under the title Struwwelpeter. The book became very popular among children throughout Europe, and, writes author and researcher Penni Cotton, the pictures and characters showed a great deal of originality and directness.

  1. "Struwwelpeter" describes a boy who does not groom himself properly and is consequently unpopular.
  2. In "Die Geschichte vom bösen Friederich" (The Story of Bad Frederick), a violent boy terrorizes animals and people. Eventually he is bitten by a dog, who goes on to eat the boy's sausage while he is bedridden.
  3. In "Die gar traurige Geschichte mit dem Feuerzeug" (The Dreadful Story of the Matches), a girl plays with matches and burns to death.
  4. In "Die Geschichte von den schwarzen Buben" (The Story of the Black Boys), Nikolas (that is, Saint Nicholas) catches three boys teasing a dark-skinned boy. To teach them a lesson, he dips the three boys in black ink, to make them even darker-skinned than the boy they'd teased.
  5. "Die Geschichte von dem wilden Jäger" (The Story of the Wild Huntsman) is the only story not primarily focused on children. In it, a hare steals a hunter's musket and eyeglasses and begins to hunt the hunter. In the ensuing chaos, the hare's child is burned by hot coffee and the hunter falls into a well, presumably to his death.
  6. In "Die Geschichte vom Daumenlutscher" (The Story of the Thumb-Sucker), a mother warns her son not to suck his thumbs. However, when she goes out of the house he resumes his thumb sucking, until a roving tailor appears and cuts off his thumbs with giant scissors.
  7. "Die Geschichte vom Suppen-Kaspar" (The Story of the Soup-Kaspar) begins as Kaspar, a healthy, strong boy, proclaims that he will no longer eat his soup. Over the next five days he wastes away and dies.
  8. In "Die Geschichte vom Zappel-Philipp" (The Story of the Fidgety Philip), a boy who won't sit still at dinner accidentally knocks all of the food onto the floor, to his parents' great displeasure.
  9. "Die Geschichte von Hans Guck-in-die-Luft" (The Story of Johnny Head-in-Air) concerns a boy who habitually fails to watch where he's walking. One day he walks into a river; he is soon rescued, but his writing-book drifts away.
  10. In "Die Geschichte vom fliegenden Robert" (The Story of the Flying Robert), a boy goes outside during a storm. The wind catches his umbrella and sends him to places unknown, and presumably to his doom.

A link to an English translation of the entire book is here.

"Family Guy" German Inspirations

I've been a fan of the Family Guy television series for years and more recently grown interest in the genre of German children's stories. I've noticed a few similar story lines between the two. Who knows, maybe it's just a couple coincidences. Maybe one or two of the writers heard the stories in their youth and some stuck.

For starters, the children's story of, "Vom kleinen Maulwurf, der wissen wollte wer ihm auf den Kopf gemacht hat" (From the small mole to which who wanted to know to him on the head has done), the story entails a mole that upon leaving his hole in the morning, gets pooped on the head and must search for the doer of the deed. When he finally finds the culprit, he returns the favor by pooping on the sleeping dogs head. Animation of the story here.

In the Family Guy episode, Peter Griffin finds bird poo on his car, so in an effort to exact revenge Peter finds the bird's house and waits for the bird to finish washing it's car while perched in the overbearing tree, squatting, reading to soil the birds car as was done to his. An eye for an eye. A shit for a shit.

Family Guy Peter Griffin Pooping on Bird's Car

"Vom kleinen Maulwurf, der wissen wollte wer ihm auf den Kopf gemacht hat"
(From the small mole to which who wanted to know to him on the head has done)

Another similarity would be the story of "Die Geschichte vom Daumenlutscher" (The Story of the Thumb-Sucker), a mother warns her son not to suck his thumbs. However, when she goes out of the house he resumes his thumb sucking, until a roving tailor appears and cuts off his thumbs with giant scissors.

In the Family Guy adaptation a German boy who sucks his thumbs is home alone, the boy ignores his mothers preachings and does it anyways. So the mother cuts off his thumbs with scissors and now the boy has no thumbs. The end.

Whatever the case may be I am happy I can enjoy both forms of story telling and look forward to many more soon.

National Leaders Tree Solution

The National Leaders Tree was drawn in the 1880's by an unnamed illustrator for Harper's Illustrated. It has been variously claimed to represent Indian leaders, South American leaders, and Russian leaders. It originally was meant to illustrate British leaders.

The reason for this illustration to be applicable over such a span in time makes me think of how people want to see meaning in everyday occurrences. It is very interesting. Because the creator is unnamed and from long ago we cannot look to him/her to tell us who the faces were meant to depict, perhaps they were intentionally done in a way that could be construed as many different people with the intent that the representation exceed any individuals and develop a life of its very own.

National Leaders Tree

I came across this spot the object illusion, much like many others, but really good. Not only do you have to spot all the faces in this tree below, you also have to guess who they represent. Since the image is called “National Leaders Tree“, you are right in thinking that the faces represent leaders of the big countries like America, Russia, England, Yugoslavia etc. How many faces can you spot?

After you've found them all, you can check National Leader Tree Solution.

The concept of the separation of church and state refers to the distance in the relationship between organized religion and the nation state.

The concept of separation has been adopted in a number of countries, to varying degrees depending on the applicable legal structures and prevalent views toward the proper role of religion in society. A similar but typically stricter principle of laïcité has been applied in France and Turkey, while some socially secularized countries such as Norway, Denmark and the UK have maintained constitutional recognition of an official state religion. The concept parallels various other international social and political ideas, including secularism, disestablishment, religious liberty, and religious pluralism. Whitman (2009) observes that in many European countries, the state has, over the centuries, taken over the social roles of the church, leading to a generally secularized public sphere.

The degree of separation varies from total separation mandated by a constitution, to an official religion with total prohibition of the practice of any other religion, as in the Maldives.

The model of separating church and state works, and applying that structural logic to practices within state needs to be done. For example, separating males and females will better everyone's lives, in the short and even more in the long term quality of life. Both factions of course will be given equal rights and resources, it's a matter of improving the environment of all human beings.

For starters schools will need to be remodeled, by either having schools split into the respective genders, with each having it's own facilities and fulling furnished institutions. Or having separate schools entirely. Moving outside of school, the media will be reformatted, each faction will have it's own specially programmed content. No longer will confrontation over which program should be on or dissatisfying subject matter viewed be of concern.

Well organized media content shall be managed by all authorities associated; government sector, educational, developmental and parental. For example sites will be analyzed mercilessly by both human involvement and sophisticated web-crawlers. Sites most relevant and suitable for an individual will be available and those deemed unethical or restricted will never even be known to the individual.

Youth of this future will be privileged to grow up in a world were the dangers of corrupting influences are unimaginable. A child will be free to expand it's time and energy on further expanding it's intelligence, understanding and world.

Talk is all fun and good but it wont chance the world. The question at hand is how are we to build this magnificent world for future generations? If these advanced children would be here now they would be able to devise arrangements in bettering the world, but in order for them to begin we must start the evolution. The paradox is similar to that of the chicken and the egg, an egg needs a chicken to lay it, but a chicken needs to be an egg, so which came first. I think for the obstacle of the new world, we must be patient and fearless because maybe years of work and waiting are required to create the new breed with the resources we have available at hand, but it will create a new future were they can do the same and  thus create a future greater than their own. Ultimately forming the foundations of evolution and a future superior to any that we can conceive in our present day.

Shoe Tossing (shoefiti)

Shoe tossing, is the act of using shoes as improvised projectiles or weapons, is a constituent of a number of folk sports and practices. Today, it is commonly the act of throwing a pair of shoes onto telephone wires, powerlines, or other raised wires. A related practice is shoe tossing onto trees or fences.

Shoe flinging or "shoefiti" is the practice of throwing shoes whose shoelaces have been tied together so that they hang from overhead wires such as power lines or telephone cables. The shoes are tied together by their laces, and the pair is then thrown at the wires as a sort of bolas. This practice plays a widespread, though mysterious, role in adolescent folklore in the United States. Shoe flinging has also been reported in many other countries.

Shoe flinging occurs throughout the United States, in rural as well as in urban areas. Usually, the shoes flung at the wires are sneakers; elsewhere, especially in rural areas, many different varieties of shoes, including leather shoes and boots, also are thrown.

Soldiers leaving the military often paint a pair of combat boots yellow or orange and toss them over a power line or telephone wire near the barracks or unit to which they were assigned.

A number of sinister explanations have been proposed as to why this is done. The foremost is bullying in which a bully steals a pair of shoes and puts in a position where the victim cannot reach it. Some also say that shoes hanging from the wires advertise a local crack house where crack cocaine is used and sold (in which case the shoes are sometimes referred to as "Crack Tennies"). It can also relate to a place where heroin is sold to symbolize the fact that once you take heroin you can never 'leave': a reference to the addictive nature of the drug. Others claim that the shoes so thrown commemorate a gang-related murder, or the death of a gang member, or as a way of marking gang turf. A newsletter from the mayor of Los Angeles, California cites fears of many Los Angeles residents that "these shoes indicate sites at which drugs are sold or worse yet, gang turf," and that city and utility employees had launched a program to remove the shoes. However, the practice also occurs along relatively remote stretches of rural highways that are unlikely scenes for gang murders, and have no structures at all to be crack houses.

Other less sinister explanations have been ventured for the practice. Some claim that shoes are flung to commemorate the end of a school year, or a forthcoming marriage as part of a rite of passage. In Scotland, it has been said that when a young man has lost his virginity he tosses his shoes over telephone wires to announce this to his peers. It has been suggested that the custom may have originated with members of the military, who are said to have thrown military boots, often painted orange or some other conspicuous color, at overhead wires as a part of a rite of passage upon completing basic training or on leaving the service. In the 1997 film Wag the Dog, shoe tossing features as an allegedly spontaneous cultural manifestation of tribute to Sgt. William Schumann, played by Woody Harrelson, who has purportedly been “shot down behind enemy lines” in Albania.

Others claim that the shoes are stolen from other people and tossed over the wires as a sort of bullying tactic, or as a practical joke played on drunkards. Others simply say that shoe flinging is a way to get rid of shoes that are no longer wanted, are uncomfortable, or do not fit. It may also be another manifestation of the human instinct to leave their mark on, and decorate, their surroundings. It has been reported that workmen often throw shoes if they are not paid for waxing floors.

In some neighborhoods, shoes tied together and hanging from power lines or tree branches signify that someone has died. The shoes belong to the dead person. The reason they are hanging, legend has it, is that when the dead person's spirit returns, it will walk that high above the ground, that much closer to heaven. Another superstition holds that the tossing of shoes over the power lines outside of a house is a way to keep the property safe from ghosts. Yet another legend involves that shoes hanging from telephone wires signals someone leaving the neighborhood onto bigger and better things. Of course, only each individual shoe-thrower knows why his/her pair of shoes now hangs from a wire.

Last Week

Jun 22, 2012

A very stressful day. I sent Molik uptown for more 18" boxes, but he returned unrepentant with 12" ones. Christine was late, as well as Harry, they said it was a problem with the subways, but I suspect they were doing sex with each other. I supervise twelve employees, most of whom would be unemployable in any other field, they are selfish irresponsible people that I know talk about me behind my back. They seem to think that their job is wasting my time and energy by making their every miniscule problem my personal responsibility. They don't care. And don't even get me started on Tracy and Jenna. And when the last one of them trundled off that night, I smelled the air and I could feel that it was time, time for a new beginning, and I knew that this was possible only through a cleansing of fire and they would all have to burn, the packing peanuts, the delivery slips all of it would dance in the warm mouth of my fire, and a new, better, wonderful me would rise from the ashed like a phoenix. Behold, the splendor of my beginning.

Where are you rushing off to? Work? Not me.
I'm going to have a sandwich in my cell and take a nap. This man opens doors for me.
I'm free.
I'm freer than you.

Sun Protection

All legitimate sunscreens do the same thing, whether it's a $10.00 bottle or a $30.00 bottle. The only difference is the higher end products have more stuff added to it, such as perfumes or skin softeners.

Doctors recommend buying the less expensive sunscreens because our skin doesn't truly need all the extra stuff. The sunscreen is all that matters. In fact, when people use the expensive product, they use it scarcely, and often not enough to effectively protect their skin from the sun's UV rays. It is strongly encouraged people buy more of the less expensive sunscreen because you wont be restricted and thus can use as much as you need and sufficiently protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Sunscreen vs Sunblock

Sunblock contains physical or inorganic ingredients that reflect and scatter the UV light and acts as a wall between your skin and the sun.

Sunscreen contains chemicals that protect your skin by absorbing and reflecting UV rays and allows a certain range of UV light to be absorbed into the skin.

What You Eat

Also Consider your diet from protecting against the sun. For both short term (such as, preventing sun burns) and long-term (such as, preventing cancer).

The USDA recommends we eat 7 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Most people don't come anywhere close.

Avoid  eating greasy and fatty foods, they are very bad for the body for a number of reasons but in regards to this article it weakens your bodies defenses against the harms of UV damage. Foods that help strengthen your bodies natural defenses against sun damage are fruits and vegetables, and greatly deep green vegetables, green tea as well.

It really is that black and white once you stop and think about it.

I Hate When

Why can't everyone just get along? Peace be with you, and also with you, and you, etc.

Danxia Landform China

Jun 20, 2012

This is a unique geological phenomenon known as Danxia landform. These phenomena can be observed in several places in China. This example is located in Zhangye, Province of Gansu. The color is the result of an accumulation for millions of years of red sandstone and other rocks.

Similar to classic Tetris with a physics-puzzle style genre.

Drop3 is a really fun game by Frosmo on Swagbucks. Falling circles, triangles, squares and rectangles in a variety of colors drop from the sky and it's up to you to group them in bundles of three (or more) to clear them from the board and thus progress through the game. Something I really like about Drop3 that is unique is that game pieces behave like coiling pillows and can affect each other.

An unexpectedly attractive puzzle game which cannot be done justice in writing, you need to play it to get the full effect. Drop3 and more available here.

Challenging Stereotypes

"Just Left the courthouse. Apparently you can't file a restraining order against everybody."

Even if you hate everything..
No one hates Hula Hoops!

It's funny because it's true.
